Video calls on Facebook Messenger

Today, Facebook introduced video calling in Messenger in a select countries. With 1.4 billion users on Facebook and 600 million of them on Messenger the service starts with a huge advantage. Competition for traditional telecom operators heats up with a slew of options for voice and video calling on messenger apps. The consumer, we guess is the winner.

Say hello to Facebook Hello

Staying with Facebook and its penchant for unbundling specialist apps, another intriguing development is the launch of Hello. According to Facebook, Hello connects with Facebook so you can see who’s calling, block unwanted calls and search for people and places – essentially a strong competitor for TrueCaller. Hello is currently being tested on Android alone.

Over 3500 apps for the Apple Watch

Apple posted record 2nd quarter earnings (again) led by strong sales of the iPhone and Mac. As part of the earnings call, Tim Cook announced that there are ‘over 3,500 apps available at launch for the Apple Watch, which is better than the 1,000 total that were ready for iPad when that device launched in April of 2010, and 7 times the 500 apps available when the iPhone’s App Store first debuted in July 2008′. The moot question is, are developers and brands rushing in to make an Apple Watch app without a strong use-case and business need? Time will tell.
