Mobile Apps: A brief look at 2016 and what’s in store for 2017 – Infographic

2016 proved to be a great year for the mobile app economy with $52 billion of gross consumer spend on mobile app stores, improvement in Apple App Store– changes in subscription model, faster app approval time and search-based apps – and the enormous success of mobile games like Pokémon Go and Clash Royale.

Last year we also saw IBM extend its Watson’s artificial intelligence to enterprise mobile apps helping the employees increase their productivity. For example, using the Passenger+ app flight attendants can gain a better insight of the traveler’s personality and customize the in-flight services accordingly.

In short, the mobile app industry grew even bigger in 2016. So, what does the future hold for the app economy? Looking at the eventful year we had in 2016, one thing is certain – mobile apps are going to dominate further.

Mobile has now taken the center stage; it is no more an optional investment for businesses. More and more companies are now using the app as a channel to establish a healthy relationship with their customers.

Time spent in shopping apps has almost doubled from the last year, short-form video is giving a strong competitionto the traditional TV sets and the chatbots are slowly becoming more useful at providing information and conversation. Virtual reality accessories that were out of reach for the masses would now trickle down, thanks to the announcementof mobile friendly VR accessories like Gear VR and Google’s Daydream Viewer last year.
