Facebook Bots, Nougat, Google Maps and more: mobile buzz of the week

The lines between digital, mobile, technology and apps are blurring in today’s world. We at Robosoft are keen followers of developments in this arena. Here’s a quick summary of what’s buzzing:

Bots: moving towards hybridization

Touted to be the future of communication in the digital sphere, bots are slowly proving their worth. In an effort to improve chat interactions with the bots on Messenger, Facebook has announced a host of new features. The bot now has features like ‘quick replies’ and persistent menu to guide people towards striking a conversation with it without floundering for words to type. Along with these, other features like account linking, integration of rich media elements and the ability to have full range of control over the bots is likely to leave a good taste in the mouth of customers. But, with the familiar interface of apps, will they be able to attract more users than apps? It remains to be seen.

Android ‘N’ is now Nougat

After a long wait, last week Google unwrapped its latest sweet treat, Android Nougat. The latest version of Android is named after an old French confection and is likely to have some delectable features like Instant Apps, split screen mode, virtual reality (check our blog on how brands are using VR mobile apps), redesigned notifications and Vulkan API support. A huge number of people were hoping the Android N to be named as Nutella.

Travel friendly features released on Google Maps

Google is introducing a new feature to Google Maps on Android that lets users add multiple waypoints en route to their destination in advance before actually setting out on their journey. Another interesting feature that frequent travelers are going to love is the ability to add notes in the timeline, transforming their trips into a digital diary full with pictures and personal anecdotes. The feature, which is being rolled out gradually will also be available on iOS.

On-demand subscription services on the rise

Total Audience Report Q1 2016 by The Nielsen Company reports that for the first time in US, the uses of on-demand subscription services have reached a 50% penetration rate. The report is a clear sign that television-watching habits are changing. Video-streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have become increasingly popular because of the features that allow them to watch shows or movies at anytime they want. The market for VoD apps is ripe and companies who haven’t considered an on-demand strategy yet should start thinking in the right direction.
