Facebook’s growing domination and more: mobile buzz of the week

The lines between digital, mobile, technology and apps are blurring in today’s world. We at Robosoft are keen followers of developments in this arena. Here’s a quick summary of what’s buzzing:

Facebook pushing users to Moments app

After pushing users to adopt Messenger, Facebook is now pushing its users to shift to Facebook’s Moments app by July 7 this year. The company has warned users that failing to do so would mean that their photos would get deleted from the Synced album. Many have expressed their anger on being pushed to install yet another app from Facebook. Nonetheless, the push has resulted in the app being ranked as #1 on the iTunes App Store. If Facebook splits its services in so many apps, it would be difficult for other apps to grab hold of that much sought after top slot.

Microsoft launched Planner

Last week Microsoft launched “Planner”, team collaboration software for Office 365 users. Similar to other project management tools like Trello, Asana and JIRA Core, Planner lets you visually organize plans, assign tasks, share files and chat. Microsoft is working hard to improve the tool. It also shared some of the new features that will be available in the next few months like the ability to assign a task to multiple users, external user access, plan templates and more. Microsoft is also planning to release it on Android, iOS and Windows.

Facebook’s growing domination at the app stores

App marketing firm Sensor Tower reported that the global download of apps from both App Store and Google Play Store has increased year-on-year by 8.2% in the first quarter of 2016. The data gathered between January 1 and 31 March 2016 is more a reflection of the increasing volume of apps. The report again emphasizes the strong foothold Facebook is trying to create at both the app stores. Other apps are going to have a tough time securing the top five slots if Facebook continues to fill up most of the important slots.
